MD event showcases locally-crafted tabletop games

Many top board, card, and role-playing games – and many indie deep cuts – are designed by DC-MD-VA residents

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Takoma Park, MD - Designed in the DMV, an artist collective of tabletop game designers, will hold its second annual Indie & Local Tabletop Games Fair on Saturday, October 18, from 12-5pm at People’s Book, Takoma Park MD. The DMV is home to designers of the world’s most famous analog games, from the party game Wits and Wagers to the strategy game Wingspan, as well as indie zine games about queerness, elderly shelter animals, deadly cook-offs, bonsai, and more.

“Community is everything for tabletop gamers – nothing beats playing games together as a way of making new friends,” says Andy Looney, CEO of Looney Labs and designer of the widely popular card game Fluxx, along with many other titles. Looney will be one of three panelists at the fair, alongside Angela Bell (“How Much Do You Really Know,” an FBI trivia game) and Dave Chalker (“Thunder Road Vendetta,” “Get Bit,” and others).

“The local community is essential to the spirit of tabletop gaming, providing opportunities for gamers to connect, share, and build lasting relationships,” agrees Bell.

From 12-4pm, attendees can browse indie games, zines, and accessories. From 4-5pm, panelists will share their experience of designing and selling tabletop games.

Designed in the DMV, an artist collective, organizes these events and regular meet-ups. It also publishes catalogs of locally-designed games and recently released a free zine of members’ one-page games.

Why are there so many game designers here? “DC has an above-average nerdiness,” suggested Elizabeth Hargrave, designer of the bestselling board game Wingspan, at last year’s People’s Book event, “so it makes it great for playtesting games” – a key step in successful game design.
